Press release

Dortmund, 08 October 2019 +++ For 15 years, babymarkt has been putting a smile on the faces of families with babies and children every day. It all started very small. The development of the last 15 years is all the more impressive: from stationary retailer to pioneer in e-commerce, from start-up to market leader – babymarkt.de GmbH remains on course for success.

From zero to 100: digital with heart and mind

It was during a relaxing holiday, of all things, that Albert Lütgenau, founder of babymarkt.de GmbH, had the idea of expanding the business model to include online trading. The first steps in e-commerce were taken on the auction platform eBay. Lütgenau quickly realised the potential and so in 2004 opened his own online shop for baby and children’s equipment.

In the following years, the company experienced rapid growth – the still fairly unknown trader from the Ruhr area became a major player on the international market. The path from start-up to market leader naturally held one or two challenges in store, but with combined forces, the team was able to prove itself time and again. From a few hundred articles in the beginning to over 100,000 articles today, from a handful of employees to over 480, from 4.3 million turnover in the first business year to 144.4 million in the last business year, the development of what is now Europe’s largest online shop for baby and children’s articles is more than respectable.

A special highlight in the history of the online shop is the strategic realignment in 2015: In addition to an internationally uniform brand presence, babymarkt was given its own technological platform. A new mobile frontend followed in 2017. These measures have further improved the speed of the online shop, making babymarkt one of the fastest online shops in all of Germany according to Google.

15 years ago, e-commerce was just as much in its infancy as our online shop,” says Bastian Siebers, CEO of babymarkt.de GmbH. “So we were able to seize every new opportunity, possibility and development and turn it into a new building block of our success. Speed and innovation are what drive online retail and after 15 years we are in a better position than ever before. Thanks to our technological know-how, every online purchase with us is a wow experience. We are doers and love what we do!

Record hunter from the Ruhr region remains on course for success

The continuous striving for its own optimisation is crowned with success at babymarkt. On the one hand, the company can report an average annual growth of 30 %. On the other hand, Europe’s largest online retailer has won several awards. More than ten significant awards in 2018 alone testify to the pre-eminence of babymarkt.de GmbH. But the entire team is particularly proud of the award for Best Online Shop of Germany Test, which babymarkt won for the fourth time in a row in 2019.

“Click. Click. Happiness.” is a promise at babymarkt. Absolute customer orientation is the basis of every action. This is how babymarkt was able to establish itself as a customer favourite within just a few years – a position the company continues to hold.

To take and defend the pole position of online retailers for baby and toddler equipment in 15 years shows how digitally competent and dynamic our team is,” emphasises Bastian Siebers. “Together we show our willpower, but also our courage to break new ground and continue to surprise our customers. We are proud of the 15th anniversary of the online shop and have prepared so many things for our customers.

For the period from 06 October to 20 October 2019, numerous promotions and offers therefore await the eager clientele.

15 years of technological progress, innovative campaigns, team spirit, hard work and ambition – the team of the largest online shop in the baby and children’s outfitting sector can be justifiably proud of this achievement and look forward to further exciting tasks and events.
